The temple, 東寺 To-ji literally "East Temple", was founded as one of the two guardian temples of ancient Capital. The temple has been the headquarters of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism. It is also famous for the tall pagoda.
Bazaar is held on 21st day in every month, and September 21 is a special day. Not only bazaar but also a special event お砂踏み Osuna-fumi, literally "Stepping on Sands" is held at the temple.
You can see white bags containing sand on the floor. People step on the sand. But what for ?
