The pavilion was built in 15th century, but the garden is revamped in 19th. This dry style garden is called 銀沙灘 Ginshadan. It literally means rapid flow of silver sand. It was made for reflecting sunlight or moonlight and lighting the pavilion. The sand contains lots of feldspar and quartz.

@philip earl: Actually, this is not BW. The saturation is decreased, but this is a color photo. I controlled the white balance so that the color of the sand becomes gray. You can see green in the trees.
