Japan Music Classics #1

Posted by
Hiro (Kyoto, Japan) on 14 July 2011 in Lifestyle & Culture.

雅楽 Gagaku is a type of Japanese classical music. It is not so popular even in Japan nowadays, so it is heard mostly at Shinto-shrine on New Year Events or wedding ceremonies. This event is a special occasion for me.

Gagaku is ancient court music. I had the chance to attend such a show of music & dance at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, in the spring of 1984. It was not yet one year after my arrival in Japan and I still remeber the fact that the music had a strong impact on me!
