Season of chrysanthemum #1

Posted by
Hiro (Kyoto, Japan) on 11 November 2010 in Lifestyle & Culture.

Chrysanthemum Figure is one of the Japanese traditional arts. The Exhibitions have been held at various places in Japan. Hirakata Park is one of those places. The first Chrysanthemum Figure Exhibition at Hirakata Park was held in 1910. Keihan Railway held the Exhibition every autumn until 2005. Because workmen of making figures are getting too old and they have few successors, they can not continue the Exhibition. This year, 2010, Keihan Railway holds the Exhibition after an interval of 5 years. The theme of the Exhibition is 龍馬伝 Legend of Ryoma. 龍馬 Ryoma is a hero in the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate 18th century. He is one of the most popular historical persons in Japan.

I once had the chance to see how these dolls are dressed in chrysanthemums, it's a difficult job and quite tiring for the person doing it! What is the thing of wonder to me is HOW THEY MANAGE to prevent the flowers on the dolls from wilting!
I look forward to the show of chrysanthemums as this is my birthday flower!

As an added curiosity I explain that the chrysanthemum is a flower associated with cemeteries and death rites here in my cultural environment.

Good afternoon Hiro
It is a very interesting and beautiful presentation. These things we do in a flower parade once a year in a neighboring village. It is always a very pleasant experience. Have a nice day and all the best.
Sincerely Christel
