Concentrated pilgrimage #2

Posted by Hiro (Kyoto, Japan) on 8 October 2015 in Lifestyle & Culture.

Do you know Shikoku Island ?
Now, you can visit there easily, but ancient days, it was far from capital. It was a place of ascetic practices for monks. There are eighty-eight Shingon sect temples in the island. Devout buddhists have been made a pilgrimage of 88 temples of the island.
If you do by foot, it takes 40 days at least.
Eighty-eight sands were gathered from eighty-eight Shikoku temples and they are placed here in To-ji. You can made a concentrated pilgrimage here by stepping on eighty-eight sands on September 21. This is お砂踏み Osuna-fumi, "Stepping on Sands".

A very interesting tradition that you've captured beautifully!! Your PoV works well here to draw my attention along both walls. Thanks for the informative narrative as well.

Ha ha, the easy way to make the pilgrimage! I was on Shikoku this spring and saw some pilgrims at a temple with their walking sticks and straw hats. I was impressed by their determination.
